The purpose of this exhibition is to draw together some of the paintings and drawings, by Cook, his artists and his draughtsmen, made during or consequently to the three voyages. Much of this material has not been previously seen in New Zealand. The exhibition is not exhaustive nor does it aspire to a chronological survey of the voyages.

James Cook (1728 – 1779) was a captain in the British Royal Navy who led three epic voyages charting the Pacific Ocean and circumnavigating the globe. His expeditions contributed significantly to geographic, oceanographic, and astronomic knowledge.

James Cook (1728-1779) was born at Merton, Yorkshire and grew up on a farm at Ayton. In 1747 he moved to Whitby and joined the merchant navy, working on colliers and other ships in the coastal trade and later in the Baltic Sea. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy and in 1757 he qualified as a master.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, in May 1768, Lieutenant James Cook set sail for the Pacific on a voyage of exploration organised by the Royal Navy. The son of a poor farm labourer, Cook entered the Navy as an able seaman in 1755 and rose through the ranks to become an officer.
