The Gweagal (also spelt Gwiyagal) are a clan of the Dharawal people of Aboriginal Australians. [1] [2] [a] Their descendants are traditional custodians of the southern areas of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The Gweagal (the people of the Gwea) occupied the southern shore of Botany Bay, which we now refer to as Kamay Botany Bay - in recognition of its original name, Kamay (or Gamay) – and to this day, descendants of the Gweagal still call Sutherland Shire home.

A Welcome to Country is a ritual or formal ceremony performed as a land acknowledgement at many events held in Australia. It is an event intended to highlight the cultural significance of the surrounding area to the descendants of a particular Aboriginal clan or language group who were recognised as the original human inhabitants of the area.

Only the traditional owners can speak for and welcome visitors to Country or give others the authority to do so. To find information about the traditional owners of a particular area contact the local area council, local Aboriginal land council or community organisation.

Welcome to Country Council acknowledges the Gweagal, Bidjigal and Gadigal Clans which are the traditional custodians of the land in which we meet and work.

On the afternoon of 28 April 1770, the families of the Gweagal and Kameygal glimpsed a ‘big bird’, a vision from another world. This was the discovery ship, HM Bark Endeavour.

If granted, permission was given as a Welcome to Country. Today, inviting an Elder to perform a Welcome is a way to recognise their unceded sovereignty of ancestral lands. It’s also a way to honour ancient and continuing First Nations customs.
