You may argue it did or didn’t succeed, but one point of beautiful design can be found in the Elves of Mirkwood.

These new artefacts referenced the design language established for the Elves on The Lord of the Rings, but also contained fresh motifs unique to the Elven cultures that appear in The Hobbit: the wild and hostile Mirkwood, and the stately Rivendell.
