Saper Galleries has carried the limited edition lithographs of Sunol Alvar since the 1970s. After our then-new gallery was built in 1986 we featured Alvar as our second major one-person exhibition.

May 24, 2017 · One example of this kind of significant Bible story painting is Alvar’s portrayal of the Nativity. In this remarkable painting Alvar sets the scene of the miraculous birth of Christ, where God himself becomes human flesh in the home of a contemporary room in Barcelona. The viewer sees the story of the Nativity from a totally new perspective.

In addition to these exhibitions, his Biblically inspired works have been added to the collection of the Museum of Biblical Art (Dallas, Texas). No matter which medium the multifaceted contemporary artist employs, he speaks from his soul about what is important to him: peace, family, love, beauty, nature, art, music and humanity.

Alvar paints with a subtle, sophisticated tenderness and feeling for his subject matter. Alvar studied at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona from 1951 to 1957.

Between 1975 and 1990 his creative efforts were focused predominantly on lithographs, but in 2000 Alvar transitioned away from lithography and rededicated himself to painting in the form of large-scale murals and canvases, encompassing a range of subjects from ethereal figures to majestic interiors to biblical narratives.

Artist Àlvar Suñol’s fine art has been displayed in over 40 exhibitions and permanent collections and over 95 galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Masters Gallery in Denver, Colorado featured Alvar Suñol in a solo exhibition showcasing the Spanish artist’s most recent works. Alvar was in attendance for the July 21st and 22nd opening receptions. In coordination with the exhibit, a new book chronicling over 75 biblical paintings, watercolors, and drawings was unveiled.

Alvar, who cites a background in primarily secular art, has taken famous biblical themes and given them a surrealist, ethereal look.
