Jan 25, 2016 · As well as the intriguing legacy of his journal observations, Cook also left a visual one, drawing maps of the journey as he went. Bound into the end of the Mitchell Library’s copy of Cook’s journal are several engraved maps based on Cook's drawings.

The map by James Burney of Van Diemen’s Land, contained in his 1773–74 journal, is the only manuscript map in the Library emanating from Cook’s three Pacific voyages. First voyage maps (1773 and 1774)

This map is one of four manuscript charts from the first great voyage of exploration by Captain James Cook, which in April 1770 made the first clear delineation of the east coast of Australia. Sponsored by the Royal Society and the Royal Navy, the expedition had several objectives.

This map, in the handwriting of Captain James Cook, shows the discoveries made in the Southern Ocean up until 1770. It includes the tracks of Abel Tasman in 1642, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1767, Samuel Wallis (HMS Dolphin 1766-68) and Cook's own Endeavour voyage of 1770, as well as ships of the East India Company.
