Nabumetone is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Nabumetone works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Nabumetone is used to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Nabumetone may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Nabumetone helps relieve pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. It can be taken as a single daily dose and appears less likely to cause stomach-related side effects than some other NSAIDs.

Nabumetone is a non-acidic NSAID prodrug that is rapidly metabolized in the liver to the active metabolite, 6-methoxy-2-naphthyl acetic acid. Nabumetone's active metabolite inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme and preferentially blocks COX-2 activity (which is indirectly responsible for the production of inflammation and pain during arthritis).
