The Hanafi school [a] or Hanafism is the largest school of Islamic jurisprudence out of the four schools within Sunni Islam. It developed from the teachings of the jurist and theologian Abu Hanifa ( c. 699–767 CE ), who systemised the use of reasoning ( ra'y ).

Kufa was a center of rational debate, so Hanafis early on became known as Ahl al-Ra’y (“people of reasoned opinion”) for their willingness to use analogy and istihsān (discretionary preference) when scriptural texts were not explicit.
