STS-49 was NASA 's maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which launched on May 7, 1992. The primary goal of its nine-day mission was to retrieve an Intelsat VI satellite, Intelsat 603, which failed to leave Low Earth orbit two years before, attach it to a new upper stage, and relaunch it to its intended geosynchronous orbit.

May 7, 2022 · Not only was STS-49 the first flight of NASA’s newest shuttle, built to replace the fallen Challenger, but it also saw the first Extravehicular Activity (EVA) to feature as many as three spacewalkers.

Endeavour landed at Edwards Air Force Base on May 16, 1992 after an 8-day,21-hour mission. The STS-49 mission set many new records for NASA. These included the first EVA involving three astronauts, the first shuttle mission to feature four EVAs, and the longest EVA to date: 8 hours and 29 minutes.
