May 8, 2018 · No, the 3.8L is a 90 degree V6. The early ones were based on the Buick 305cid V8's, with two cylinders missing. The 4th gen F bodies got the Gen-II 3.8L V6, RPO code L36. Basically the 3.8L V6 is to a 305cid V8, as the 4.3L V6 is to a 350cid V8.

It's just to cut down on the vibrations inherent to a 90degree V6, balancing the rotating assembly is different, they spin the crank on a machine, weigh all the pistons, and add/subtract weight so the whole rotating assembly is nice and balanced.
