New Yorkers may see shortages and higher retail prices when they start their holiday shopping as the first large-scale stoppage in almost 50 years started affecting ports from Maine to Texas Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of dockworkers have walked off the job, including workers at Port Tampa Bay. Depending on how long the work stoppage lasts, it could lead to supply chain issues and price increases for consumers.

Members of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) union went on strike, after a six-year master contract expired.
