A new patent indicates that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 controllers could have a feature that may be surprising for some fans.

Now a new patent published by Nintendo suggests players may be able to turn the controllers upside down and plug them into the ‘wrong’ side of the system. Instead of reporting an error, the patent suggests the Switch 2 could instead flip the display 180 degrees, essentially allowing the user to turn the system upside down.

If we had to judge by the included diagrams, the trigger and bumper on each controller would act as the mouse click. Multiple included images show a hand with the thumb on the joystick. Multiple parts of the patent mention the use of the thumbstick, and we suspect it could act as the scroll wheel or serve some other scrolling function.

As noted by VGC, the patent suggests that the player will be able to turn the controllers upside down and insert them in the opposite sides. The image on the display of the Nintendo Switch 2 would then flip, much like when you rotate a modern smartphone or tablet.

With the Switch 2, then, being able to flip the console upside down will allow you to choose whether you want the single headphone jack pointing up or down. Naturally, other features that you'd normally see on the top of the device, including the power button, volume control, and cartridge reader, would also shift to the bottom.
