The potential 3-year ban would allow for a state study of the environmental and health effects of synthetic turf fields.
The bill, LD 1177, would halt any installation of new synthetic turf and also stop renovation of existing spaces.
But new artificial turf fields have replaced natural grass fields at several high schools in the last five years, including Kennebunk, Messalonskee in Oakland, Cony in Augusta, and Gardiner.
