Microsoft is officially discontinuing the Skype messaging service on May 5, 2025. Apparently, there wasn’t enough user interest to keep the once-iconic video call app alive. If you’re one of the dwindling few who still uses Skype in 2025,

“Skype calls have excellent sound quality and are highly secure with end-to-end encryption,” Skype’s homepage read in 2004.

To encourage this transition, Microsoft will soon allow users to sign in to the free version of Teams with their Skype username and password. By using the same credentials, users will be able to access their existing chats and contacts if they want to pick up where they left off.

Microsoft will soon switch off Skype, a pioneering telecom and video call platform that emerged from the rubble of the dotcom era.

For users, Skype will go offline on May 5, when Microsoft replaces it with a free version of Microsoft Teams. Teams has been Microsoft’s chosen successor for years, offering the same kinds of video calls and group meetings.

Microsoft said that users will have the choice to either move to Microsoft Teams for free, or export their data from Skype.
