The Yankees do have an opening at first base with Anthony Rizzo becoming a free agent last weekend when the organization opted for a $6-million buyout instead of a $17 million club option for 2025.

Pete Alonso is one of the top power hitters on the market this winter, and New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Tuesday that he has spoke to agent Scott Boras about the longtime New York Mets star.

Cashman said he had a brief conversation with Boras about “a lot” of his clients. Alonso received a qualifying offer from the Mets on Monday worth $21.05 million for next season that he’s expected to decline as he searches for a long-term deal.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters Tuesday that he has spoken with Scott Boras about Mets' free agent Pete Alonso.

Cashman said he spoke Monday with Boras at the general managers meetings and revealed he had a conversation with Soto after the season, which ended with the Yankees losing the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games.

Brian Cashman told reporters at the GM Meetings that the Yankees will “put our best foot forward” when it comes to trying to retain Juan Soto.
