In an eleventh-hour agreement late Thursday night, YouTube TV reached what it called a "short-term extension" with Paramount to keep channels such as CBS, Comedy Central and MTV on its subscription streaming service after access to them was set to go dark following failed negotiations around a contract renewal.

Paramount is amid a merger with movie studio Skydance, an $8 billion deal announced last summer. YouTube TV, which launched in 2017 with a monthly subscription of $35, has since more than doubled its fee, currently at $83 per month.

YouTube TV subscribers braced for the loss of popular programming as negotiations for a new distribution contract went down to the wire. Google said it would offer customers an $8-a-month credit to compensate for the outage.
