Republicans, numerous service industry workers and restaurant owners have warned that phasing out the subminimum wage for tipped workers will put jobs and businesses at risk.

The Michigan Senate on Thursday approved a bill that amends the timeline of the minimum wage increase ahead of the new law going into effect next week.

A little over a week before wages for tipped workers were set to increase, the Michigan Senate passed a bipartisan bill that would change the increase schedule. The legislation now heads to the House.

The Regulatory Affairs Committee voted 6-4 to send the proposal to the full Senate, which could take up the measure later Thursday.
