The No. 2 South Carolina women’s basketball team picked up a win Thursday night against No. 19 Alabama, 76-58 to improve to 6-0 in SEC play. The Gamecocks are now 33-15 all-time against Alabama, and 23-0 under head coach Dawn Staley. Tonight’s matchup marks the first meeting between these teams in which both are ranked nationally.

Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks in scoring against the Crimson Tide, setting a career high with 21 points. The former Camden High School star was 7 of 10 from the floor and was a perfect 7 of 7 in free throws.

Dating back to the early-1900’s, Kentucky owns a 114-40 advantage all-time head-to-head, which includes a dominant 57-10 advantage in Lexington. As for recent years, Kentucky has six of the last 10 meetings, which includes a 117-95 victory in Lexington a year ago.

Alabama was off the mark, going 5 of 18 in the first quarter. Poor shooting wasn’t the only reason for slow start. South Carolina was quicker in the paint offensively, scoring easy layups. On the other end, the Gamecocks locked down the Crimson Tide, forcing tough shots and not allowing second-chance points.
