Burundi's ruling party has bestowed the title of 'eternal supreme guide' on President Pierre Nkurunziza, a party official has confirmed Sunday, as critics claim he wants to lock in power for life.

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza was sworn in for a controversial third term in power Thursday, the presidency said, following elections last month, weeks of protests and a failed coup.

In 2015, then-president Pierre Nkurunziza's run for a third term in office sparked protests and a failed coup, with violence leaving at least 1,200 people dead while some 400,000 fled the country.
