A public health association and one of the nation’s largest worker unions are suing the Trump administration over the abrupt cancellation of hundreds of research grants, arguing that the moves were arbitrary and capricious and that the federal grant process is supposed to be above politics.

Among the researchers suing over canceled grants are Dr. Brittany Charlton, the founding director of Harvard Medical School's LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence, and Dr. Katie Edwards, a University of Michigan professor who researches preventing sexual violence among minority communities.

The National Institutes of Health terminated numerous federal research grants that officials say no longer align with the agency’s priorities. But experts see multiple avenues to appeal the NIH’s decisions.
