NFL ownership voted on Tuesday at the Annual League Meeting to make the dynamic kickoff permanent, while moving the ball spot on touchbacks from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line for kicks sent into the end zone for the 2025 season.

The NFL on Tuesday announced some key changes to the game for the 2025 season, including on how the ball will be spotted, the rules for overtime and kickoff rules.

NFL owners approved a variety of rule changes Tuesday, including a modification of the dynamic kickoff that will place the ball after touchbacks at the 35-yard line and a tweak to the regular-season overtime period to mirror postseason rules.

To better measure the line of scrimmage, the NFL is using Hawk-Eye virtual technology for the upcoming 2025 season.

The method for measuring first downs in the NFL will switch from chain gangs to camera-based technology in 2025, the league announced Tuesday.

Starting next season, a system of cameras will determine whether to award a first down rather than trot out a 10-yard chain. But humans will still decide where to spot the ball to begin with.

After testing an electronic first down system during preseason last summer, the NFL is taking another step toward moving away from chain gangs this fall. The NFL announced Tuesday that Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology will be the primary method used to measure line-to-gain scenarios during the 2025 season.

During the 2025 season the NFL will determine whether teams have reached a first down by using Sony’s Hawk-Eye system of six, 8K cameras that will optically track the position of the ball.
