Lil Nas X opens up to PEOPLE about no longer feeling the need to be liked by everyone — and entering his free era at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.

In 2019, Lil Nas X was everywhere. In 2021, he was still pretty big. Since then, his luck hasn’t been quite as solid, but the “Old Town Road” singer returned this week with not one but two singles (so far) to help christen whatever era is coming next.

Lil Nas X almost collaborated with Taylor Swift, but the project fell apart before coming to fruition, according to the rapper. The “Old Town Road” hitmaker told E! News in an interview published on Friday, March 28, that he and Swift, 35, were set to make music together at one point.
