Sky-gazers observe a micromoon as the celestial object is at or near the farthest point from Earth — also known as apogee — along its orbital path, according to NASA planetary scientist Dr. Noah Petro.

April’s pink “micromoon” will appear smaller than other full moons this year as it nears its farthest point from Earth in its orbit around the planet.

The Farmer's Almanac states that the name is derived from the early spring bloom of a North American wildflower called " Phlox subulata ," commonly known moss phlox. "This flower, often called 'moss pink,' was in full bloom around April’s full moon," the Farmer's Almanac said.
