A large avalanche has closed a section of a central Idaho highway, and officials say the road will remain closed "until further notice" until the massive amounts of snow are removed and conditions are determined to be safe for drivers.

A section of Idaho Highway 21 is closed following an avalanche Sunday that caused slides up to 40 feet deep. The Idaho Transportation Department announced that the stretch of highway between Grandjean and Banner Summit is closed “until further notice.

Police identified a man who died an avalanche in Silver Fork Canyon near Alta on Feb. 8.
