Meta’s independent oversight board on Wednesday rebuked the company for scrapping the social-media giant’s fact-checking policy earlier this year – urging Mark Zuckerberg’s firm to assess “potential adverse effects.

Some of the board’s strongest language came in condemning Meta’s handling of posts relating to the U.K.’s anti-immigration riots last year. Each of three posts related to the riots that Meta decided to leave on the platform “created the risk of likely and imminent harm. They should have been taken down,” the board wrote.

On Wednesday, Meta’s Oversight Board called on the company to evaluate how recent policy change’s may negatively impact human rights. The Board’s request comes alongside its publication of its first 11 case decisions following Meta’s sweeping policy changes at the start of the year.
