Law enforcement missed critical opportunities to prevent a 2022 mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado, a pair of lawsuits filed over the weekend allege.

Victims and family members of those killed in the 2022 mass shooting at the LGBTQIA+ Club Q in Colorado Springs have sued the El Paso County Board of Commissioners and others, alleging authorities could have prevented the shooting if they had enforced the state’s “red flag law” against the gunman.

A central focus of both lawsuits was the El Paso County commissioners’ and the then sheriff’s refusal to enforce Colorado’s red flag law passed in 2019, which allows law enforcement to temporary take someone’s firearm if they are deemed a threat to themselves or others.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuits include survivor Barrett Hudson, who still has three bullets in his body from that night, other victims and relatives.
