Walgreens Boots Alliance has agreed to pay $300 million to settle allegations that it filled millions of invalid prescriptions for opioids and other controlled substances and illegally billed federal programs such as Medicare for those medications, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday.

Walgreens will pay up to $350 million for illegally filling millions of illegal opioid prescriptions as part of a settlement with the DOJ.

The federal government accused Walgreens of knowingly filling millions of illegal prescriptions for controlled substances between August 2012 and March 2023. A spokesperson says the company admits no liability and disagrees with the government's legal theory.
