I'm giving it 5 stars because of what it is, rather than the service we received. Milford Sound is one of the 'must see' places in NZ, and because of that a lot of people 'must see' it. There's com…Full review by merlin a

We did the coach, cruise, and walk from Te Anau. Our guide, Hari, made the experience what it was. He was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the local flora/fauna and his enthusiasm showed …Full review by kathrynsM4907TR

We are planning to take a cruise on Milford Sound either 7/11/19 or 7/12/19. What are the crowds like? Any problem with booking a few days in advance and how best to purchase tickets? Also, how are the crowds this time of the year and how do we avoid booking a cruise that may get cancelled for not having enough passengers? We hear it is the slow season.

Well, we took most of the advice given on this one & had a great trip. We're home now. Feedback was much appreciated. For those considering the same trip in July/August time frame here are a few observations or recommendations you can choose to use: 1 - We booked our trip on Mitre Cruises 2 days in advance for the 9:55 am cruise and immediately received an automated confirmation via e-mail. Then 1 day before the cruise, received another e-mail saying the 9:55 time slot was full and they gave us the choice of moving to the 12:40 or 3:15, or rebooking all together. Not a big deal for us. We took the 12:40. The word of advice here is keep an eye on your mobile device for e-mails leading up to your date in case of any changes. This will allow you to plan your drive down Milford Road, assuming you are driving your own car. 2-Although the earlier cruise (9:55) allows you to miss the buses & crowds, keep in mind the sun does not rise until around 8 am so not much time to stop anyway and still give yourself enough time to get there. 12:40 was better for that and there was not much of a crowd or buses at the terminal or along the way. 3-stay in Te Anau. Leaving from Queenstown to get to Milford makes it an unnecessarily long drive. 4- Driving your own car was easy and not a big deal. I would do it again. In fact, I'd recommend it for taking your time along the way to stop & see the sites. Just keep an eye on the highway status/updates/conditions/weather forecast and just know that weather can change things. We rented a car and also rented snow chains in case they were needed. For us the weather was fine, minimal rain, and no closures, did not need the chains. Same thing goes for driving from Christchurch to Milford. We did it & the road conditions were normal. They keep the highways maintained well. We took 2 days getting there and coming back we did it in one run (Te Anau to Christchurch), long but easy road trip. Had a wonderful time is NZ. It's a beautiful country and we'll be back again.

Hi, Not aware of the pick up points in Queenstown sorry. Yes there is toilet facilities on the boat On the particular bus we went on there was no toilet but the driver we had was lovely and very accomodating and we did have stops along the way which some had toilet facilities but in saying that it would depend on the persons specific toileting requirements, such as for example how often you may need to do and if there is a toilet facility available then. Enjoy regards Mick
Q:
Does the boat nose on a waterfall like the other cruise did?
A:
Yes, i think it does it better as it is smaller.

For better Milford Sound cruise rates, I recommend you check those offered by Book Me. However, take into account demand factor during your proposed dates and also your larger group size. For travel time, please consider whether many busses will be clogging the roads at that time. I chose an earlier cruise to avoid heavier traffic on the trunk roads to Milford. Good move to start journey nearer Milford instead of Queenstown. I stayed the night in tiny Manoupori, 30 minutes drive south of Te Anau.

On the way we just stopped at mirror lakes and Upper Ellington. We got an early boat so as to miss the tour buses and this worked well, as we came off the boat lots of buses arriving. We then took our time going back in the afternoon and stopped at the chasm, pops view, Ellington valley. There are loads of stops though and it's worth downloading the Te Anau - Milford Highway map. if you google those words it should come up - it's on the doc.govt.nz website. sorry trip advisor doesn't seem to allow me to put a link in
