Hello I’m trying to plan a trip Shetland next year and after any advice and help? Sometime in July mainly hoping for Killer whales know they can turn up anywhere! I’m looking to book somewhere as a base that would be good for getting around the island/s wondered how long it would take to drive around from place to place etc? Also any other places that are good for wildlife? Any help would be greatly appreciated, regards, Simon

Killer whales are anybody's guess, as you say, they can turn up anywhere. Quam B+B on Yell is a good base for getting around most of the islands, being one ferry ride from each of Fetlar, Unst and Mainland. Most places are pretty good for wildlife, so you won't go too far wrong wherever you are based. I would recommend moving between a few places while you are there, we normally stay on Fetlar, Unst and south mainland, but Yell is best if you want just one base throughout. Roads are normally very good and it normally takes us 2-3 hours from north Unst to south Mainland, depending on ferry times. Hope that helps.
