This is a lovely beach to visit if it isn't crowded. I found it to be less of a headache than Copacabana and less busy than Ipanema. It is one of the areas you should check out and explore when you f…Full review by iamyaman
Hello to everybody! A few quaetions re Grumari region. 1. Can you add any more details about the tubes with cholera? 2. (In particular to Charlotte M) What do you mean when saying that the beach is protected and it's better to come early? 3. Is it a good place for snorkeling? Any details are precious. 4. Is there any foot path across the hills to the coast from Grumary? Is hitch-hiking possible there? Thanks!

Hi Vladimir, Prainha is on a natural reserve, which means no one is allowed to construct new buildings there. It means there are no hotels, no residential buildings, only a small kiosk/ beach hut that sells drinks and snacks and some toilets. Including the beach it is a protected area of 147 hectors. You can visit the park, which has a visitors centre and apparently lots of wildlife. Though, because it is protected there is very limited parking. At the weekends and on holidays when the park and beach is most busy, this parking fills up quickly. So we always try to get there early or arrive when people are already beginning to leave. Secondly, it is known as a surfers beach because it has big and strong waves. It doesn't mean there isn't snorkeling, as the winds may be low, but probably the waves might make it difficult for you to snorkel... but I'm not sure. I don't know anything about these tubes with cholera. It is a clean beach in the middle of nowhere so you can count on it being less polluted than any of the city beaches. Hope it helps!
Can we go on beach in end of November ? How is weather in November?

November is an excellent time. It will not be too hot yet but the water will be a bit warmer. Still, if you go on a weekend it will be packed and parking will be a problem, if you arrive after 8 am.
I fly into Rio April 3-6 and wanted to hangout at a nice beach, surf and eat good food. Is there anywhere to sleep close to this beach? Can anyone give specific direction to this beach? Thanks!

HI this beach is at protected natural reserve so there are no buildings on or around it. At the beach there are two huts that sell snacks and so on. The closest you can get to this beach is Recreio..where there are plenty of small hotels, and where the beach is also great, by the way... I would stay in Recreio and mainly surf there. (but do get over to Prainha, it is beautiful - you can bike)
