Although the Aurora activities are constant natural occurrence, the recommended viewing season from Alaska is from late September - early March. Alaska Geophysical Institute has a fantastic site with answers to FAQs, Aurora forecast and a real time Aurora tracking! I diligently followed it for several months, and timed my visit accordingly.
